Sarah Woods
Bundjalung woman
Flight Lieutenant
Royal Australian Air Force

I am a proud Bundjalung woman with connection to Widjabul Wiabul and Nyangbul clans through my mother; a direct descendant of King Jack Kapean from the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. NGULLIBOO MUGGI – “All Of Us Strong” This Bundjalung saying reminds us of our people’s resilience and strength in community. It speaks to the enduring spirit that has been passed down through generations, a testament to our ability to overcome challenges and thrive despite adversity. Our culture, traditions, and connection to Country is our foundation, providing us with the strength to stand united and support one another. This resilience is not just a part of our history but continues to shape our identity and our future, as we draw upon the wisdom of our ancestors and the solidarity of our community to navigate the complexities of the modern world. In every aspect of life, from the everyday to the extraordinary, this saying reinforces our commitment to each other and our collective well-being, reminding us that together, we are stronger and capable of achieving greatness.

Growing up, I was fortunate to live in many different parts of Australia, with a stint in Malaysia, thanks to my father’s service in the Royal Australian Air Force. Warrant Officer Gary Woods served 48 years in the Air Force, enlisting on January 20, 1975, as a cook. Growing up as a RAAF brat provided my siblings and I with many opportunities. With this in mind and a call from my family to return to Country, I embarked on my journey to join the Air Force. Supported by my family and WOFF Jodi Ross, I was commissioned on March 27, 2021, as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force to serve at RAAF Base Amberley as an Indigenous Liaison Officer.

Through my service, I aspire to develop and maintain enduring, genuine, and impactful partnerships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the Air Force. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been caring for and defending Country for millennia. I acknowledge that our knowledge, skills, and connection to Country add significant strategic value to Air Force capability.
