My family traces back to Central Queensland, in the Mount Isa region. I grew up in southeast Brisbane, on Quandamooka Country. Even though most of my family is from up north, Brisbane is where I spent my childhood. Since we lived away from my extended family, my mother made sure we stayed connected to our Aboriginal culture. She felt this was very important and connected with local elders, forming a dance troupe during my high school years. These experiences really grounded me and kept me connected to my heritage.
I joined the Navy in April 2011 when I was 20 years old. Joining the Navy was my way of breaking free from the cycle I was in and exploring the world. As an Electronics Technician, I’ve traveled to some pretty amazing places and gained invaluable experiences. One thing I’m really passionate about is being a role model for other Indigenous service members. I’ve been a member of Bungaree, the RAN Indigenous Dance Troupe since 2014. This has taken me to both domestic and international stages, showcasing Indigenous culture. I want to show that Indigenous Australians can achieve great things and make a real difference, both in the Defence Force and in their communities.
When I’m not in uniform, I’m all about family time. My wife, Ayesha, our two-year-old daughter, Alannah, and our Cavoodle, Diego, mean the world to me. They keep me grounded and remind me of what’s truly important.
